SAMANA

The Samana peninsula is a geographic wonder in its own right : Evry winter, humpback whales congregate in its magical bay.

The town of Samana, in the middle of the peninsula has an unusual history in that it was founded by american slaves who arrived around 1824 and until this day, many natives speak english as their mother tongue.
Along the peninsula the turquoise bay is lined by luxurious tropical vegetation and small islands like Cayo Levantado make for perfect daytrips by boat.
A large part of the peninsula remains wild and little populated. Adventurous visitors can venture into as yet unexplored jungle and bathe in the rivers. The Samana peninsula is also heaven for those wanting to watch the whales who come to the bay to give birth.
Between 10000 and 12000 humpback whales from the north Atlantic return each year to spend the winter in the warm waters of the Caribbean, from the Bahamas to Venezuela. A protected species since 1956, these whales come to the Samana bay in their thousands every year from mid january to mid march.

"Banco de la Plata" is a 3.000 km² zone, protected by coral reefs, about 65km to the north east of the coast. It is the main winter congregation spot for the whales and has since 1986 been made a sanctuary for their protection by the government.

Las Terrenas :
One of the most picturesque places in the country. This lovely beachside village has quickly become a European style beach resort.
Many expats have brought commodities such as broadband internet, satellite TV, restaurants, real estate agencies, a hospital, hotels, schools and skysurfing.
Its beaches and landscapes will remain etched in your memory for ever...

The Los Haitises National Park :
This national park is home to many species of birds such as ibises, jacanas and terns. In its heart are the Los Haitises caves, containing paintings by the Tainos indians.
